Ok need opinion help.
So Currently im moddeling a katana.
Anyways im modeling this katana and i came to a lil problem. You see those ribbons on the handle and on the sword holder.
Can we just apply texture and players will see the ribbons, and attach a sticking out ribbon, and texture it to?
or do i do a really hard job and actually make the ribbons by threading vertexes(model them by hand, so they really exist)... it will be really like week of work, but it will look really really good.
----------
So i dono what should i do?

Re: Ok need opinion help.
the ribbons on the "saya" that stick out should still be modelled, but i guess the other ones can simply be textures

Awesome model, you're skills are improving fast
The grip / handle needs to be much more straight though. And because it's an MMO you can probably get away with just using a texture for the whole grip, same for the Tsuba (flat metal handguard)...that'll just be 1 flat plane, textured with a transparent texture (use black for a transparent background if you're using a .jpg)
Edit: If I was you I'd still keep the highpoly model for your portfolio though. The way you've done that handguard is really nice. But if we're going to use up to ~1000 models at any one time in the game, they can't all be that high quality.

Re: Ok need opinion help.
either use lower quality modds or a stronger server.
btw: how do i save a maya thingo into a modd for the game?

It's not to do with the server. It's just pointless to waste vertices.
To save something we can use, I'd try exporting to .fbx [it's a good format and someone else will be able to do further conversion] or .obj because that's the format we need it in. In Maya you should be able to 'export' it from the menu somehow.
Re: Ok need opinion help.
btw, is it sharp? :p like the sharp edge of the sword, cuz its not clear in the picture u've posted

Looks like you might need to temporarily weld your shuriken all-round (I'd add a line of extra poly's for each edge of each side (for 8 edges) then weld those) ...then perform a boolean operation to make a hole and delete the outmost edge of vertices after. But I don't know if that'll work
Also judjing by the smoothness it's way too high-poly...you need to simplify it because preparing it for a boolean is going to be very difficult as it is anyway.

Re: Ok need opinion help.
eum, we're going to need variations of everything, to expand the range of items ppl can choose from, So you do need to make those kinda stuff, and since they are easiest to begin with, you should do it.

Yes, and that applies to nearly all models
Shuriken for example aren't just star-shaped. We will most likely use 10 or more variations so that you have different weapons to throw, but can still buy in bigger quantities. From Wikipedia:
Shuriken are commonly known in the West as "death stars," "throwing stars," or "Ninja stars." However, the shuriken took many different shapes and designs during the time that they were used.

Yea, I'm not to great with texturing.
Maybe some1 who has talent for texturing could texture our models.
